Kink Safety

Posted by HIM on Thursday November 24th, 2011

Everyone has limits, and just because you may not have found them yet, doesn't mean that you should be reckless.  Kinky sex, like all other, carries with it at least some risk of transferring HIV and other STIs.  So how do you work your kinks out safely? Check out Down and Dirty (NSFW), which touches on some subjects that are not for the faint of heart, yet still carry risk of transmitting HIV and Hepatitis.
If you're looking for quick tips, check out some of these quick overviews for some of common kinks.

FISTING

Fisting is when someone puts his hand in your ass or when you put your hand in someone’s ass. If you’re getting a hand in your ass you’re a fisting bottom. If you’re putting your hand in someone’s ass you’re a fisting top.

Fisting often causes bleeding because the lining of the ass is sensitive and hands are typically bigger than anything else that goes in there.

Infections that are passed in blood, like HIV and hepatitis C, may be passed during fisting.

This is especially true when two or more fisting bottoms are sharing the same top. Blood from one guy may get onto the top’s hand and is then transferred when the top moves to the next guy. Tops may get infected through nicks or cuts on their hands.

Other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can also be passed during fisting.

If you’re a bottom, make sure that your top does not have cuts on his skin and that his nails are cut and filed smoothly. Insist that he wear clean, properly fitting latex/vinyl/nitrile gloves. If he is fisting another bottom before you make sure that he washes up and changes gloves before he puts his hand in your ass. Tops can protect themselves by doing the same thing.

Use lots of lube and don’t share your lube with other guys.

For deep fisting, where part of the arm is also inserted into the ass, it’s best to use long latex gloves (sometimes called ‘opera’ gloves).

WATER SPORTS AND SOUNDING

Water sports or ‘golden showers’ is playing with urine or piss. The urinary tract where piss comes out is called the urethra.

Healthy piss is sterile. There is virtually no risk of picking up or passing on HIV or other STIs from getting pissed on or from drinking healthy urine.

Piss is not healthy or sterile if there is a urinary tract infection, like Gonorrhea or Chlamydia. People who have infections in their urethra often complain of discomfort or pain when they are taking a piss.

Blood in the piss is rare but, if it is there, it may not be visible to the naked eye. If the person’s blood is infected with HIV or hepatitis C,  it means the piss is not sterile.

Sounding is when someone inserts a surgical steel rod or ‘sound’ into his urethra. Sounding can produce blood, which increases the changes of picking up or passing HIV or hepatitis C.

If you’re into sounding make sure you use your own rod; don’t share with others. Use lots of your own lube and don’t force the sound into your urethra; let gravity do the work. If there is pain you should stop or at least take a break.

SCAT

Scat is playing with shit or feces. Shit is not sterile but it is generally okay on intact skin.

Hepatitis A and B can be passed when playing with shit, especially if there are breaks in the skin or if you get the shit in your mouth. Make sure you have your vaccines for hep A & B before getting into scat.

Intestinal parasites can also be passed if you get someone’s shit in your mouth or if you rim (lick) someone’s ass, even without tasting any shit.

It’s hard to get HIV or hep C from playing with shit unless there is blood in it.

SPANKING OR WHIPPING

This activity varies from light spanking to a full-on whipping or flogging.

In general these activities are low risk for picking up or passing on HIV or hepatitis C.

Floggings that break the skin will cause blood to get onto the whip. If the whip is shared there is a chance of picking up or passing on HIV or hep C. The HIV risk is quite low because it does not survive long outside the body but hepatitis C is hardier so there is a stronger chance of picking up or passing on the virus.

If you like to get flogged it is best to use your own whip; don’t share with others.

At HIM we believe that an active sex life is a big part of healthy living and we strive to provide information to gay guys about the kinds of sex they're having. We understand that this encompasses a diversity of sexual activities which we treat equally in order to serve all guys. We do this because, as we say in our Mission, we value the ability of gay men to make informed decisions" which includes sex.

Do you seriously call this promoting healthy sexuality? This is clinical psychopathology. People wanting to eat feces and be beaten are not healthy - they are mentally ill. Instead of recommending treatment, you are encouraging such destructive and physically detrimental activities.
