In the light of the recent gay suicides, here’s an interesting article on how the queer press are possibly harming the gay community more than it is helping it by dramatizing facts and reporting incorrect information. Daniel Villarreal of Queerty noted how numerous notable and influential queers in the press were quick to blame the death of 18 year old Lance Lundsten on gay bullying – when in fact, this was not confirmed at the time of the report. Such an attempt to provide ‘shock’ reporting without first confirming the validity of the claim indeed harms our community. From a mental and social health point of view it makes the gay community more vulnerable to attack from our opponents and provides an unnecessary bubble of negativity for gay youths.
