Trans PULSE

Posted by HIM on Thursday December 22nd, 2011

"Imagine being rushed to the hospital for a life-threatening illness or accident, and being turned away for being trans - whether that’s made explicit by the medical staff or through something underhanded, like being left in the waiting room for an absurd amount of time while other people are called in...This happens"

That was an excerpt from an interview between Bob Leahy, Contributing Editor at Positive Lite Canada's Online HIV Magazine, and Caleb Nault from Trans PULSE.  Trans PULSE is an innovative community based research project that aims to assess how trans people are navigating life in Ontario and in a most recent phase, the experiences of HIV+ trans people.  The interview, available here, is a very concise and cogent discussion on the experiences of the trans community.  While some of the the findings are disturbing, it does explicitly describe how transphobia and cisnormativity are bad for the health of trans people.

An important feature of Trans PULSE project is that it is driven and conducted largely by people within the trans community.  If you're looking for more information or resources for trans people check out the Trans PULSE website where they have bulletins and a list of advocacy groups in each province.
