Loving Relationship Or A Toxic Addiction?

Posted by HIM on Thursday February 17th, 2011

Please tick any of the following statements that apply to you:

  • I love my partner dearly but I don’t seem to have the ability to trust him.

  • I will tolerate anything to reconnect with my partner whenever we fight or have an argument – even if it is his fault.

  • I am constantly anxious about his whereabouts and what he’s doing.  I send endless texts, phone calls, and messages to lower my anxiety and make sure that he has not turned from loving to unloving.

  • I don’t know who I am without my partner.  My self-identity is significantly shaped by what I do with my partner.

  • My friends and family complain that I am jeopardizing my connection with them by spending too much time with my partner and using them to soothe my escalating anxiety issues I have towards my partner.

  • I become increasingly more dependent on my partner yet feel less and less fulfilled in our relationship over time.

If you find yourself agreeing with most of the statements above, then you may be suffering from addictive relating; an all too common addiction where the need to ‘desperately keep someone has much more to do with needing the other at any cost than about sharing a loving relationship’.
