"Boys should be vaccinated against HPV" was the recommendation from an American federal advisory committee to the CDC last week. HPV, or Human Papilloma Virus, is the most common STI and has been linked to a variety of cancers. Initially the vaccine for HPV was intended to protect women from cervical cancer. However the panel realizes the importance of giving it to young guys in order to prevent anal cancer, genital warts, and precancerous anal lesions.
The vaccine has been approved for guys between 9 and 26 since 2010 and is most effective in those who are not yet sexually active. Ask your doctor or health care provider about the vaccine for HPV.
