Health Initiative for Men is no stranger to using attention grabbing images, like in our newest campaign Hottest at the Start, to showcase the intent of its messages. The designs for the condom packages tend to speak for themselves – these are for gay guys who fuck. With well over 150,000 distributed, they seem to be pretty popular in the clubs; yet it hasn’t been without some criticism. Some guys have said that the images are overly sexual and that they aren’t representative of the sex that most guys are having.
So what’s the deal?
Studies have shown that gay men in particular respond better to eye-catching sexual imagery and we at HIM have certainly embraced this notion. Jody Jollimore, Senior Program Manager at HIM, adds “Research tells us that gay men respond best to information about their sexual health when it’s presented with explicit images of gay sex.” By emphasizing sex-positive and gay-affirmative images, gay guys understand that this is a message for them; and in HIM’s case, it’s also a message which is written by gay guys.
We have set the bar high in past campaigns and whether it’s sex in unconventional places or showing some fetishes, we plan on keeping it up.
