STIs AND GAY MEN

Knowledge is power

The thing about sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is that you don’t always know you have one. You could have no symptoms and still infect others. That’s why regular testing is so important, especially after a high-risk sexual encounter.

What if the test is positive?

No reason to panic! You can consult with a nurse and, if needed, receive medication.

HIM tests for:

Chlamydia

One of the most common STIs, chlamydia is caused by a bacteria that infect the urethra, and can also infect the anus or throat.

Riskiest behaviours: Oral and anal sex

Genital Herpes

There are two strains of herpes, type 1 (HSV-1), which is usually associated with cold sores on or near the mouth. HSV-2 is the virus most often responsible for genital warts.

Riskiest behaviours: Kissing, hand jobs, naked grinding, oral and anal sex, rimming

Gonorrhea

This bacteria infects the urethra, and can also infect the throat, anus, testicles, prostate and bladder. In rare cases, even the eyes can be affected.

Riskiest behaviours: Oral and anal sex

Hepatitis A

This virus causes liver inflammation and is passed in the feces of an infected person.

Riskiest behaviours: Rimming

Hepatitis B

This virus also causes liver inflammation, and usually presents itself as an acute (short-term) infection. A small number of guys, however, will develop chronic (long-term) Hepatitis B.

Riskiest behaviours: Kissing, oral and anal sex

Hepatitis C

Another liver-inflaming virus, Hepatitis C is a chronic infection for most people.

Riskiest behaviours: Anal sex

Human Papilloma Virus (HPV/Genital Warts)

This is the most common STI and has several different strains. Some can appear on your penis or anus as genital warts, and some aren’t even visible to the naked eye. Most importantly, some strains have been linked to oral and anal cancers. Did you know we offer an HPV vaccine?

Riskiest behaviours: hand jobs, naked grinding, oral and anal sex, rimming

Syphilis

The syphilis bacteria creates symptoms that are similar to other diseases, so it can be difficult to diagnose.

Riskiest behaviours: hand jobs, naked grinding, oral and anal sex, rimming
