Practicum with HIM

Practicum placements at HIM are enriching, rewarding, challenging and incredible learning opportunities to apply your skills and knowledge; and learn from peers who work directly with the community. If you want to dedicate the time of your practicum/internship to contributing to the health and well-being of gay, bi, queer men and gender diverse people, HIM can be the place for you!

Who is included?

HIM is committed to equity and prioritizes offering practicum opportunities for people from racialized and marginalized groups including: trans and gender diverse people, Indigenous/Two-Spirit people, people of colour, and people with disabilities.

Our practicum staff compliment (coordinators, supervisors, mentors) is currently a group of gay, bi, queer men and gender diverse people.

HIM considers practicum applications from students who identify with the work that we do regardless of gender or sexual orientation.

Because HIM is a peer-led organization, students most likely to be offered practicum placements are those who share experiences with our participants. Our participants are:

  • Gay, bi, and queer men (trans and cis)
  • People who are less “out”
  • Gender diverse people
  • HIV + and HIV –
  • Non-binary people
  • Sex workers
  • Women (trans and cis)
  • Questioning and/or in transition

If comfortable, applicants are encouraged to self-identify in their cover letter or in communication with the designated coordinator/director of the programming relevant to the scope of your practicum. We can assure confidentiality if the applicant chooses to disclose anything personal.
