The quadrivalent HPV vaccine (HPV4) is approved for use in men by Health Canada for prevention of genital warts and certain types of cancer.  As of September 1st 2015, a HPV vaccine program for boys and young men, who are at a higher risk of contracting the virus, is implemented as part of the publicly funded immunization program in BC.  This program aims to provide protection to those who are most vulnerable to HPV infection and related disease.

Males eligible for free Gardasil® vaccine include males 9 to 26 years of age (inclusive) who are:

  • Men who have sex with men (MSM) including those who may not yet be sexually active or those who are questioning their sexual orientation.
  • Street involved.
  • Living with HIV
  • Males 9 to 18 years of age (inclusive) in care of the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD).
  • Males 12 to 17 years of age (inclusive) in youth custody as per the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Gardasil is available at all the HIM Health Centres in Vancouver and in the Lower Mainland.

Those not eligible for free HPV vaccine, but who would like to receive the vaccine, can purchase it from most pharmacies and travel clinics. Please check with your health insurance as some plans may cover the costs.
