Workshop Overview:
These materials were developed by a youth leadership team in Kelowna as part of CBRC’s Do You Mind? Safer Dating for 2S/LGBTQIA+ Youth initiative, a three year project working to prevent dating violence among sexual and gender diverse youth ages 18 to 24. The team built this workshop for their peers, drawing on scholarship, community writing, and their own lived experience to walk participants through love and connection, the history behind why queer relationships so often look unconventional, how that history still shapes dating and relationship violence today, and practical tools for identifying needs and setting boundaries.
Below you’ll find three resources: the full facilitator’s guide, the speaker notes, and the presentation slides. The facilitator’s guide covers everything from adult education principles to section by section notes on timing and content. The speaker notes give a script that facilitators can adapt or read from directly. The slides are the visual backbone of the workshop itself.
These materials were built to be shared. Local organizations, community groups, and youth programs are welcome to use and adapt them, especially by adding local resources, case studies, and land acknowledgements specific to where the workshop is being run. The version here was developed on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Syilx Okanagan Nation, and facilitators elsewhere should adjust that content to reflect their own local context.
This work was made possible through funding from the Public Health Agency of Canada, with collaboration between the Community Based Research Centre (CBRC) and Health Initiative for Men (HIM).
