HIM is a nonprofit society that aims to strengthen the health and well-being in communities of self-identified GBQ men and gender diverse people in BC.
Celebrating the Diversity Found Within our Community in the BC Interior
The Health Initiative for Men (HIM) I AM Campaign is a first-of-its-kind health promotion campaign dedicated to the health care needs and concerns of GBT2Q+ in the Interior of BC. Through consultation and collaboration with health care providers, community organizations, and members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community across the region, HIM has created a series of bespoke images that celebrate the diversity found within our community in the Interior while highlighting the services and resources available locally – with the goal of achieving greater health and wellbeing.
Many of us have multiple, intersecting identities – Click on the I AM statements related to you to learn more.
I Am Queer
Being open about our sexuality or gender with our family, friends, and communities, is one way we can outwardly embrace our identities. From personal relationships to professional interactions, I am comfortable sharing important parts of myself with others. HIM’s services and programs are also for folks like me.
GET INVOLVED WITH HIM Working toward our vision of “GBQ men and Gender Diverse people building healthy lives together” we want to empower members of our diverse communities to organize and lead community programs that will help address needs that might be underserved by existing programs led directly by HIM.
By becoming a Community Organizer with HIM, you will have the full support of HIM staff to develop your own program idea that you will be able to host via HIM and have promoted to HIM’s audience. Activities hosted through the Community Organizers program will also benefit from financial support to assist with costs associated with organizing and facilitating.
SEXUAL HEALTH It can be difficult finding access to a health care provider who can help us with our sexual health needs. HIM has created several pathways to getting hooked up with the care we need –
- “PLUS” is a once monthly HIV/STI testing event that HIM helps facilitate in partnership with local organizations in several communities in the region. To learn more, visit our PLUS page.
- HIV PrEP and Doxy PEP are available through the regional Tele-PrEP Program. Read the one-pager before calling the BCCDC for an appointment at 604.707.5600
MENTAL HEALTH HIM offers both free and paid counselling services virtually to those within the Interior Health Region. On top of that, all counsellors at HIM are 2SLGBTQIA+ identified themselves. To arrange a counselling session, contact the Mental Health Program Specialist at 604-488-1001, extension 235.
I Am Positive
Health Initiative for Men works to support people living with HIV, and recognize that being Positive is only one aspect of a person’s identity– we are not defined by our status. Access to HIV treatment, judgement-free healthcare, an affirming community, U=U awareness, and resources are vital aspects of our health journey.
SOCIAL HEALTH Opportunities to make new friends can be few and far between in the region. HIM has both in person and virtual groups available to folks in the Interior and Across the Province. Check our calendar for local upcoming groups. Don’t see one you like? Why not try leading your own HIM group through the Community Organizers Program.

I Am Two-Spirit
Holding health knowledge is something that not only benefits the individual, but the community as well. HIM strives to create resources and services that are culturally informed and locally relevant.

I Am Discreet
We live in a world where others make assumptions about who we are. They assume we’re straight unless we tell them otherwise. They assume we’re gay because we’ve had sex with other guy. We should all have access to community, as well as sexual and mental health services that embrace us for who we are. – Outness.ca
