Slow Dance Project

Volunteers are needed for a creative inquiry/study on male intimacy in public and private urban spaces.

We are seeking volunteers to study gay, bi, queer and/or trans-male intimacy in public and private urban spaces. This project explores the barriers men face in male-to-male intimacy in public spaces. The study will occur both inside the Scotia Bank Dance Centre (677 Davie Street, Vancouver, BC) and outside on the street level.

The artistic inquiry/study aims to research the embodied experiences of gay, bisexual, queer and trans-male intimacy and tenderness in public spaces through a creative inquiry. You will be asked to engage in partnered slow dances with other participants in two separate environments (an indoor private space and an outdoor public street-level space). This will be video-recorded and photographed. Following this, you will be asked to reflect on these experiences through drawing and writing prompts. These artworks and documentation will be collected for research and artist reproduction. A group discussion will follow, in which participants will reflect on the dances in the two settings and discuss their experiences in a group. This group discussion will also be video recorded.

To be eligible, you must be a self-identifying gay, bi, queer and/or trans-male between the ages of 19-99 living in Vancouver or surrounding communities.

The artistic inquiry/study will take approximately three hours to complete. Participation is not compensated, but light snacks will be provided.

Mental health support will be available on-site to those who need it.

If you are interested, please email Health Initiative for Men (HIM) at [email protected] for more information.
